Landscape Lighting FAQ's

1.    How are landscape lighting systems controlled?  Do I have to be at home to turn it on?  Is there a timer?
Landscape lighting systems can be controlled a few different ways.   Photocells detect when the sun has set and turn the system on, and then turn it off when the sun rises.  Timers allow you to program when you want the lights to come on and when you want them to go off. Photocells and timers can also be used together, for example to turn the system on at dusk and to turn it off at a prescribed hour.

2.    I have some prized plants in my backyard that I am interested in highlighting with landscape lighting, but I am worried about the appearance of the fixtures in the daytime.   Is there something that will accomplish the task without having big floodlight bulbs visible?
Lightscapes by Design has a wide range of fixtures available for highlighting or accenting specific plants.  Most are small in size, and some even will mount below ground for complete invisibility.

3.    My home is currently under construction.  When is the proper time to get you involved with landscape lighting?
It is a good time to begin discussing the lighting objectives during the planning and construction of your home.  As landscape designs are developed, we can develop your lighting design possibilities.

4.    My landscape plants were just installed. Will I have to put in new landscape lighting when the plants mature?
12 volt lighting is very flexible in its design allows easy movement or re-adjustment of fixtures as a landscape matures without significant labor or expense.

5.    Will you be available to maintain my lighting system after you install it?
We offer a maintenance program to keep your lighting system in excellent condition, year after year.

6.    Will the installation of low voltage lighting tear up my yard?
Lightscapes by Design is completely conscious of our customers needs and all work is done by hand.  We never use trenchers on residential projects and remain conscious of utilities, irrigation and plant materials. Our goal is to leave your residence like we found it.

7.    Why are the home improvement store lights so much cheaper?
Hardware store lighting systems are made for their ease of installation, have more flaws due to their convenience and can’t put out nearly the same quality of light a professionally installed system can. Transformers are not multi tap to adjust for voltage drop. In terms of durability, they will not stand the test of time and typically end up costing more in maintenance. Often the homeowner will become frustrated and completely abandon the lighting project.

8.    Is it affordable to use this type of landscape lighting?
Yes. Low voltage lighting consumes about 1/3rd the electricity compared to high voltage (or line voltage) and is far less expensive to install.
